Mama Leia

Welcome to the world little ones, and congratulations to Mama Leia. Leia is a Cream Legbar and she is our mother of the year here in the forest!

Every year we experience one or two hens going, what you call, broody. In chicken world, brooding is when a chicken suddenly decides that she wants to sit on her eggs in order to hatch her baby(íes).

If you approach a broody hen on her laying box, usually because she’s been there all day, she’ll fluff up like a porcupine and refuse to budge. At that point, if the time is right to hatch some chickens into the forest, a clutch of eggs will be placed lovingly underneath her.

The experience of seeing a momma hen raise her chicks is truly an incredible one. We have blessed to have them in the forest.
