If you’ve never been to the Hostel before it is customary that you stay as a regular guest for a few days ($20 per night), help out and get a feel for the place. This also shows us what kind of a worker and living companion you are. We are all friends and co-volunteers here so a good fit of personalities is very important.
Once on work exchange you will be expected to help out in all areas of the day-to-day running of the Hostel. Garden work is always a constant! At present we are preparing for the spring/summer seasons in our spray free veggie, flower and herb gardens. Work in the gardens is usually done early in the mornings so we require that you are a early riser.
Back at the domes we have a rotating staff member (long term volunteer) on office duty throughout the day while others do maintenance repairs, cleaning, tending to our chickens/goats and other daily chores. The constant is that there is always work to be done.
We each have a chore that is done daily. Some of these are laundry, recycling, compost tech. working in the kitchen or the garden. Once on work exchange usually the first chore assigned is laundry. There is always plenty to do. Its work, but its fun – which for volunteers can be virtually the same thing.
Often we have several organized projects being worked on. Projects are very interactive and we work together in accomplishing them. Most of the volunteers leave with a new set of skills and life changing experiences. This is one of the coolest things about working here. In a way, everything is a lesson and learning experience.
Volunteers stay in small private rooms with a double bed inside the larger geodesic dome. A vegetarian dinner is provided, with produce from our garden. Excess garden produce is also available to volunteers and left overs are sometimes available for lunch. We go into town weekly so personal groceries can be obtained then.
We have a unpredictable rotation of work exchange and so it is hard to tell when help will be needed. Calling is probably the best means of getting through to us. 912 264 9738. Let us know of your intentions to volunteer and the date of arrival.
