Summer Update

Posted June 27th, 2020

We hope that this message finds you well, and safe with your family, friends and loved ones. While it was a very difficult decision to postpone the hosting of our Guest members this summer, it is clear the current events have proved that our closing was in the best interest of the Southeast Georgia community and beyond.

Each week that has passed has evolved into another challenging scenario where our content of character is illuminated by the events unfolding around us. We want to take this opportunity to thank you for visiting the Hostel Website and ask that you stop with us now, take a moment of silence, and listen to your heart beat, and sounds of those that you care about around you now.

What is your name? Where are you from? What are you thankful for?

My name is Eddie, and I am from Wisconsin. Today I am thankful for my son, Balance, who is of the forest, born of love and light. I’m grateful for Tom finding this grove of oaks long ago, and for his passion in the service of others. He is one of my most influential teachers. I am thankful for the rooster, Dr. Bronner, who shows me how to be a better person in the way that he cares for the flock of hens and the fellow ducks. He cares not that they are of another feather, because he knows the value of sticking together. I’m so appreciative of the lessons learned through trial and error. The forest has a great sense of humor, and while it can have a heavy hand, it also mends and nurtures like most nature settings.

Spring into Summer Update 2020

Posted June 4th, 2020

The fireflies have all but left the forest, though they lit up the entire month of May with brilliant, tiny blasts of color flickering in every direction. The Barred owls’ early spring courting calls have given way to the omni present yacking of the pileated woodpeckers. The cool nights are no longer, and the mosquitos and yellow flies have arrived, but in amounts to be expected for this time of year.

The days are full with the care of the gardens, forest, ducks and chickens, and we are expecting the arrival of a new brood of baby chicks that will be hatching during this Strawberry Full Moon. Like many areas on the planet, there have been more wildlife creatures moving through woods, on our paths, due to the stillness and absence of human foot traffic. There certainly has been a large spike in deer visits, and they appear to greatly enjoy the broccoli heads that are currently turning to seed.

The natural life cycles of the Forest are all in tune with the changing seasons, and the rains that we are expecting this week should push out more floral blossoms. “Il y a des fleurs partout pour qui veut bien les voir. ‘There are flowers everywhere, for those who look.’ ” -H. Matisse May the spirit of the Hostel in the Forest find you well and safe. Good luck with your gardens, whether they are sewn in soil, or the imagination.

Let’s grow something wonderful together.
