Weekly Update 9-30-2008

Posted September 30th, 2008

It has been deliciously cool sleeping weather at night in the forest lately, and the mosquito population is thinning. This Saturday we’re having a garden party, to prepare for a fall planting. We’re still short a few gardeners, so if you’d like to lend a hand while you’re staying with us, just ask and we’ll happily point you towards whatever needs some love.

The weekdays have been still and quiet, and the weekends packed full with guests, so if you’re hoping to stay with us for a weekend, be sure to call as far ahead as possible. This goes especially for our Health & Well-Being Retreat, coming up soon the weekend of October 24th. Details can be found above.

Weekly Update 9-22-2008

Posted September 22nd, 2008

This week temperatures have finally begun to drop in the forest, down to where standing still in the common room doesn’t cause one to be bathed in sweat. The nights have also cooled off, and we’re raising our maximum number of guests just slightly from the quiet time of the summer. The Hostel has remained extremely popular throughout the summer, often booking weekends full several weeks in advance. As always, please contact us if you need to cancel your reservation – otherwise your bed will remain unavailable to another potential guest.

Saturday our longtime family member Ko’alani led a dreamcatcher workshop, and the Hostel is also putting together a Health & Well-Being Weekend Retreat for October 24th. Workshops potentially include yoga, chi gong, reiki, and beginning massage techniques, the focus being on teaching easy and meditative ways to heal oneself and others. Full details will be available on our website soon.

Weekly Update 9-15-2008

Posted September 15th, 2008

This week at the Hostel we’ve had a few ex-staffers and ex-managers come through and love up on the place. Ko’alani has joined us on staff for a little while, and she made some magic in the common room, cleaning it at all angles and actually somehow making the space larger. She will also be leading a dreamcatcher making workshop this weekend. Travis Bowman, manager from 2003, is here and pouring water for the sweatlodge which has begun again now that it’s beginning to cool just a bit. Forecasts predict a drop of about 5 degrees starting mid-week for us in the forest.

We were also blessed to receive a whole truckbed full of flagstones from a local horticulturist – thanks Whitney! We’ll be putting them to use as soon as it cools off a little bit.

Our garden has become somewhat of a jungle this August, and we’re looking forward to some gardeners arriving soon to begin preparing it for a fall planting. We have been cooking plenty of desserts with the pears growing from our tree in the garden though.

Weekly Update 9-01-2008

Posted September 2nd, 2008

Well, the mosquitoes have definitely returned in full force after all the rain we’ve had lately at the Hostel. We’ve been experimenting with natural bug repellent made from grapeseed oil, with extracts of lemongrass, sage, lavender, tea tree, neem and rosemary. It seems to keep many away but not all, and not for a long time.

Our Labor Day weekend was sparse, with not more than ten guests unevenly distributed throughout, though we were blessed to host a massage therapist from Gainesville on work trade. Thanks Lisa! We had a number of workshops, including book-making, yoga, and old local slave songs recorded by Murray and hosted in his treehouse – probably the most popular workshop of the weekend.

We have been slowly repairing the slight damage done by falling trees and just cleaning up in general after all of the fallen branches, and crossing our fingers that the next hurricane will pass us by far enough away that we won’t have to do it again, nor have our mosquito population increase any more!
