Every year on the 4th of July we celebrate a combination of the Hostel?s birthday and Independence Day. This year’s was kicked off with games. We played a 2 day badminton tournament, bocce ball, a 3 legged race, egg toss chaos, a very messy pie eating contest, water volleyball (men vs. women a tie of course), glow stick diving and as always, plenty of swimming and lounging. The festivities were followed by nightly BBQs, veggie and meat dishes…yummy.
Golden Pinecone Awards were distributed to the champions while full bellies were had by all. Thanks to all who came out and participated!
Onto other news, the baby chicks are growing more every day. So much that we sometimes confuse them with the older hens. The garden is presently yielding a variety of tomatoes and potatoes; also an abundance of zucchini, eggplant, and okra. Our corn has been shucked, dried and is ready now for grinding into corn meal. The lemon cucumbers have been pickled and are fermenting their way to delicious goodness. Due to our unusually mild weather this summer we are still fortunate enough to, on occasion, have a salad from the garden. The “time of the blueberry” is unfortunately coming to a close. Much thanks to all who walked the fields; collecting plump berries for dinner and snacks. Blueberry salsa anyone?
Special thanks go out to our new work exchange, Ken and Lacey, for your enthusiasm and great spirit.
That’s it for now. Looking forward to see you all soon.
With love, The Forest and its humble servants
