HITF February Update 2021

Posted February 5th, 2021

There are many signs in the Forest that point towards the ushering of spring. The canopy shows glimmers of red, and upon closer inspection, it is clear that leaves are about to return to our deciduous trees. The young hens that hatched last spring have begun to lay and the surplus of eggs will be donated to local food banks. Cold weather greens in the winter garden are about to welcome the springtime starts from the green house. The Farmer’s Almanac says that our last frost is estimated for the 23rd of this month. Our elder neighbors suggest Valentine’s day as the time to plant potatoes, and we will follow their advice and garden throughout that special day. We are keeping busy during our closure.

We have been able to get rid of all the graffiti that guest members have scribbled on the huts, and it is hoped that the clean slate will allow the eye to see the forest with more ease. We have a wonderful art corral that we suggest anyone with the inspiration to create, to please direct that energy towards this area which has been designed for this purpose.

We want to assure our Hostel community that we will reopen when it is safe to host the Hostel experience. The challenges are multilayered, and the solutions are complex, but when we get to the point where we can reopen, we will spread the good word. Until then, we wish to thank everyone for the donations that have helped sustain the Forest during these past 11 months. It lights up our hearts and we are so grateful for our Hostel family.

We hope that you and yours are well, and that you have access to green space. May your spring garden grow flowers, herbs, produce, and leafy greens in bounty.

Take care and May the Forest Be With You
