Fall/Winter Update

Posted October 11th, 2019

Whew, what a big summer we have had here in the forest! We’ve had a number of exciting projects that our dedicated volunteers have been working on. We have had the joy of introducing a bunch of new baby ducks and chicks into the forest family! They sure have some personality amongst them, and are extremely sociallable! They love climbing into someone’s lap for a nap. We’ll see if the trend continues as they grow older. One by one, each shingle on the main domes have been given the complete spa treatment. They each have received a wash and a coat of our special mixture of linseed oil and pine tar, now their original luster can shine through. The Art Corral has been redone as well, and looks better than ever before! Several artists spent time in the forest to collaborate on a new style for the building. The bunk space on the bottom floor has light flooding in to shine light on the beautiful murals that have been created.

It’s brought a lot of joy to the forest to see, our newest garden, the Solar Fields, really flourishing. Many visitors say how they can scarcely believe their eyes. All summer, there have been the most lovely zinnias in full bloom. The butterflies have been busily exploring the flowers of these and many other plants. The pathways have been opened up to reveal and support the longleaf pines and oaks that were planted only a few years ago. The beloved T-trail has even been rerouted to include the solar fields as a stop on its journey through the forest. The hugel mounds that were created five years ago were freshened up, and have proven to be beautiful spots for all sorts of plants to grow. More hugel mounds are being created so that the future forest gardeners will be able to plant fields of food. With the bulk of the hot weather behind us, our current gardeners have been dedicating most of their time to putting as much food in the ground as possible.

May the Forest Be With You
